Laarne Castle

The magnificent Laarne Castle is one of the most beautiful and best preserved water castles in the country, just a stone’s throw from Ghent. The castle is open for individual and group visits. This historic spot is also an excellent setting for meetings, children's parties, ceremonies, receptions, team building activities, photo shoots and so on.

Beautifully preserved medieval moated castle

1294 AD: a charter mentions the 'Court of Laerne'. It is the first citation of the castle. This proves that the first stone of this medieval moated fortress was laid down more than 700 years ago. The pointed round towers and imposing square donjon date from this time. Through the centuries follow various additions and reconstructions. The fortress grows into a comfortable summer residence or 'maison de plaisance.' In 1673 Laarne is elevated to the status of barony and the property acquires its current appearance: the main entrance is moved to the village, a long lane connects it to the church and four pavilions are added to the courtyard. Today Laarne Castle still breaths grandeur: exquisite furnishings and the famed European silver collection of Claude Dallemagne ensure an unforgettable visit.
