We all know them from fairy tales: witches in pointy hats, riding broomsticks ... Throughout Europe in the 16th and 17th centuries, women and men who deviated from the norm were tortured and executed in so-called witch trials. Few ordinary people stood up for them. Perhaps for fear of being persecuted themselves. In Laarne, witch trials with torture were held in the castle tower at the beginning of the 17th century. With the video guide WITCHES! you will explore the castle from top to bottom: the salons, the kitchen, the knights' hall, the prisons ... Together with the priest Jan Schatteman (played by Ivan Pecnik) and the cleaner Josyne (played by Heidi De Grauwe), you will immerse yourself in the castle's past and learn all about the famous witches of Laarne.
Let yourself be taken back to one of the darkest episodes in the castle's history. Who were these alleged witches? How did it come to this? What was nagging at the priest's conscience? And what is the secret of Josyne the cleaner?
The video guide is suitable for everyone aged 12 and over and is available in Dutch, French and English. The guide is shown on a tablet that you can obtain at the reception desk.
