Nestled in the picturesque town of Damme, you will find the historic St John's Hospital. Dating back to at least 1249, and likely even earlier, this site served as a sanctuary for the sick, a refuge for pilgrims, and a haven for weary travellers who sought shelter and sustenance. The former hospital was used as a nursing home until 2014. Today, Herita has stepped in, to explore ways to unlock the site's potential. Herita will assess the restoration needs and how it can play a role in the preservation and reuse of this monument.

Seven centuries of architectural history

Hidden behind the grand facade of the former St. John's Hospital lies a truly remarkable sanctuary. For over 750 years, this site has provided uninterrupted care to those in need. The original hospital structure dates back to the latter half of the 13th century, serving as the foundational heart of the institution.

Throughout the ages, the site has evolved into a sprawling complex of buildings, offering a glimpse into seven centuries of architectural history. As visitors explore the grounds, they are treated to a harmonious blend of diverse styles and forms, seamlessly integrated into a cohesive whole. The enclosed gardens surrounding the hospital not only afford breathtaking views of the historic structures and the nearby Church of Our Lady but also serve as tranquil havens, beckoning visitors to linger and reflect.
