Baroque chapel in Meerdaal Forest

1652 AD: Lord Steenbergen has a chapel built in Meerdaal Forest. It marks the spot where a mysterious statue of the virgin Mary miraculously appeared in earlier times. The statue was believed to cure people suffering from swamp fever. Pilgrims come flocking in. When revolutionary French troops destroy churches and abbeys in 1793, local residents are able to save the shrine.

Today you can still visit this beautiful baroque building with 17th century interior. With a floor size of 10 by 17 meters and a height of almost 15 meters, it is one of the biggest chapels in Flanders. Nearby you can find the very old source 'Minnebron' that provides clear and pure drinking water since time immemorial. Miraculous healings are also attributed to this source.
